Alitrip (Chinese name was Qu A), a travel booking business owned by Alibaba. Yesterday, they announced that they have re-branded as Fliggy, Chinese name is FeiZhu(Flying-Pig). Two years ago, Alibaba announced that they were going to enter into the online booking business, the sub-unit Alitrip named the new brand Qu A. However, the domain name qua.com was soon acquired by its competitor qunar.com at a high price. Qu A has had a very difficult time building up its business, and now they kinda have no other choice, but re-branding.

Right now, unlike the first brand Qu A, Alitrip paid great importance to the brand domain name this time. They have acquired Fliggy.com on Oct.17th 2016, and registered Fliggy.us, Fliggy.hk and Fliggy.tw on Oct. 14th 2016. They also own the pinyin of their Chinese brand name Feizhu.com/.net/.cn.

To qunar.com, it was a great success acquiring competitor’s brand domain, though a high price, but it could not be higher than marketing fees. And to Alitrip, it is an unforgettable lesson. Think about how much they need to spend on new domains and new marketing plans. What a pity.
